Do you have a vinyl door that needs to be painted? Whether it’s old, peeling or the wrong color, you’ll need to peel back the paint and take it on with some fresh paint. Vinyl doors are an easy project for just about anyone who can use a roller and brush. Let’s look at some steps for how to paint vinyl doors.
Steps for Painting a Vinyl Door:
Step 1: Remove the door from hinges, blocks
Step 2: Remove all the screws. Usually, there will be several small screws in the corners or on the top and bottom of the door pulling it away from the frame. You’ll need to get all of them out. New screws will hold it back after painting. ( These steps are for a side door only – you really need to remove the one on the opposite side of your house)
Step 3: Use a putty knife and scrape off any remaining paint that’s still attached to the frame, then cover with masking tape so you don’t get any paint up on it.
Step 4: Sand any areas that need it. I’ve found that sanding the door makes your job a lot easier and the door will look cleaner and more professional.
Step 5: Caulk around any corners where the vinyl meets. Apply some caulk with a caulking gun and let dry for an hour or two.
Step 6: Prime the surface of your door if you need to, (Usually when you’re lime painting, but it can be done on wood or metal doors too). Primer will help keep paint from absorbing into and through the vinyl which will give you better coverage.
Step 7: Paint using latex paint. You probably need at least two coats of paint, but use more if you need to. If you’re doing it as a DIY project, let the first coat of paint dry overnight and then apply the second coat the next day.
Step 8: Replace any hardware and reinstall the door. TIP: Use your old screws to put your vinyl door back on the frame if you can’t locate the screws that came with your door. They will usually be long enough. Don’t worry about matching them up because they don’t necessarily have to match anyway.
What kind of paint do you use on a vinyl door?
I prefer interior latex paint because it’s easy to clean with no harsh chemicals, it cleans up with soap and water. The only problem is that I have 3 dogs who love to chew on my doors and will chew through the latex paint just like they would any other type of paint. So if you have pets, puppies or small children, I recommend an exterior heavy duty paint instead.
Should you paint a vinyl door?
If it’s old and peeling, you’ll need to sand it down and prime it. If it looks dirty or dingy, then clean it with soap & water. If it’s the right color but you want to change the color for some reason, then you can paint it with a latex paint as long as you follow all the instructions above.
What kind of primer do I use on vinyl?
I suggest that you use an exterior primer on a vinyl door. This is especially important if you’re painting it a darker color or in your home’s primary color. If the wrong kind of paint gets absorbed into the vinyl, you’ll have problems later on down the road with peeling paint, bubbling, etc. Since this is an old door that has never been painted before, it’s better to use exterior primer on it just to make sure.
What is the best color to paint interior doors?
The best color to paint an interior door depends on what kind of house you have and the style you’re trying to achieve. If you have a contemporary style, then something like black would look great. If you have a traditional style, then something like white or dark wood tones would look best.
What type of roller is used for doors?
You’re going to need a paint sprayer or roller in order to get the job done. The roller will force the paint up against the surface of the door and then you’ll use a brush to apply it smoothly onto the surface.
How much does it cost?
This is an easy DIY project that can be done for under $20 including paint, primer and hardware. The first coat of paint is $15-$30 depending on price, but if you decide to do two coats and prime it before painting, you’d pay around $15 for both coats of paint.
